There have been many shifts in my style over the years. In college, my style reflected my coming out process. I interpreted being bisexual to mean that I dressed butch some days and femme some days. I cut my hair short and explored what I thought it meant to look gay. I had fun with changing between butch and femme and getting different reactions from it.

Then, I became an elementary school teacher. I didn’t feel as comfortable exploring looking gay as a teacher. I dressed femme and was content with it. I didn’t feel a need to explore being butch any more.

My next style shift happened when I got a new teaching job in a wealthy community. My salary increased significantly and I was in a school culture that was more stylish. I remember going on my first shopping spree. I felt such delight in buying nice clothes. I also lost weight around this time. One of my favorite pastimes was trying on different clothing combinations at home. I started picking out my outfits the night before and eventually started planning out my outfits for the week.

Then I had children. Two children. At the same time. Their total weight was 14.5 pounds. It was amazing and beautiful and traumatic. My body would never be the same (nor would my life). Style was on hold for a while. I couldn’t fit in pre-pregnancy clothes and never would again. I had to learn how to dress myself in a new way to feel comfortable and attractive.

Four years after having the twins, I am still learning how to dress in a flattering way. As a queer woman, I am part of a community that values body positivity. After spending years trying to change my body and lose weight, I am committed to accepting and working with the body I have now.

Being part of this blog has started me on a journey of exploring my style more than ever. I would describe my style as sensible, artsy, and feminine. I like to add chunky accessories and color to make my outfits more interesting and stylish. I also like playing around with different patterns.

I am learning that style is a way for me to express my creativity as well as be playful and bold.

I LOVE the pops of color that complement this outfit – from the bag, to the jewelry, to the tights! I also loved reading about the personal evolution that happened, and how Beth’s style changed along the way. Rock on Beth!
