Basically, everything I loved about England. Right in the heart of Chicago. Naturally, when I walked by them I knew I was bound to go back to sample some delicious food.
Copper Fox is one of the newer restaurants to grace the River North area. They’re so new, they don’t even have a website yet — just Facebook! Adorable logo, stunning decor, and a menu that made me have dreams of the food I would one day eat there.
Cue excuse for a birthday lunch and you bet I was all over going here! I finally got to sample the amazing menu that tantalized me for several weeks.
We got a table and I immediately booked it for the drink menu. After spending lots of time in England, I honestly find it kind of weird that we don’t have a drink with lunch here in America. So when I have the option to sip on something while I dine I definitely will. I went with a lovely fruity chardonnay that supported the rest of my meal rather beautifully.
I had a beet and goats cheese sandwich which had fresh arugula (or rocket, depending on where you come from), and was served alongside some pretty scrumptious sweet potato tots. Sarah sampled their fried avocado salad, though her avocado was not fried so as to work with her allergies.
Which reminds me- they were actually pretty great with that! The menu didn’t have terribly much that was dairy and egg free from the start but they were willing to work with us to modify a dish so that Sarah could enjoy the amazing food without getting sick. Any restaurant that takes the time to do that is A+ in my book! So good job, Copper Fox.
The food was, needless to say, amazing! It lived up to the expectations that I had been building in my head. My sandwich was so so so delicious. I’m convinced that beets at goats cheese are the most delicious combination known to culinary kind and, thus, it’s the combo that brings out my foodie more than most places.
Sarah’s salad was super tasty, too! It came with these candied jalapeÃ±os that were a little sweet, a little pickley, and a little spicy and just made the salad so perfect, particularly since the avocado was just raw. It definitely supported al the ingredients in the dish. I can only imagine how good it would be with the fried version!
We finished our meal and actually got to chat with Dominic Angotti, the general manager. He inquired about our meal and made sure our allergy needs had been well tended to. I got to hear a little bit about the restaurant and their future plans which include a sidewalk patio (my favorite!). Then he asked about dessert and this was where they really shined.
We don’t do dessert terribly often since most desserts are laden with milk and/or eggs but they went out of their way to create something just for us. A fresh raspberry sorbet with chunks of strawberries and (because I mentioned it was my birthday) a candle sticking out the top. Definitely off-menu and very simple but it showed a commitment to the diner as well as their commitment to quality ingredients. That was easily some of the best sorbet I have ever had!
My overall experience at Copper Fox was seriously wonderful. I will be returning there again and again for a high quality lunch, a round of drinks, or whatever I happen to be feeling on that particular day. Make sure to check them out at 155 E. Ontario St and let me know how the experience is!
